Re: 02/25/13 What's Your Diagnosis

Congratulations Ms. Frankenfield, you are correct!  Any area that picks up stain on the cornea is a corneal defect, or “corneal ulcer.” Ulcers can be caused by trauma, foreign bodies, bacterial infection, and/or fungal infection. Corneal ulcers are very painful to your horse and require aggressive treatment. Treatment consists of topical medications including antibiotics, antifungals, anti-inflammatories, and Atropine (a medication that dilates the pupil). Depending on how severe the ulcer is, topical treatment may be as often as every hour! Other aspects of treatment include systemic anti-inflammatory drugs like Banamine, and possibly systemic antibiotics as well. It is important to treat the eye aggressively, because ulcers can become severe very quickly and require surgery to save the eye.
